5 reasons why iPad isn’t better than a notebook or smartphone

The announcement of iPad brought a mix bag of emotions for me at least. First, I was excited about its announcement. But once I realized the features, the significant ones  it was missing, it just didn’t go well with me. Steve Jobs claimed it to be way better than laptop or smart-phone for that matter. This very claim got my attention and I just started to think whether Mr Jobs was bang on target or was it the other way around. By now you would have probably realized that it was a false claim. I have compiled a few reasons that suggests this – iPad is far far away from offering anything better than a mobile phone or a laptop or even a netbook for that matter. Read on to view the reasons.

Here are the reasons:

  • No Adobe Flash – iPad offers the best browsing experience – you got to be kidding me. Does the browsing experience excludes watching videos. How many YouTube videos you watch daily? Just answer this question and you will know how much iPad will be useful to you
  • No Camera – This is a big blow. Even iPhone has a camera. As I mentioned previously, if it lacked a front camera it would have been acceptable, but the absence of camera is something I simply can’t buy.
  • No Multitasking – How can it be better than a laptop if it doesn’t allow multi-tasking. Even mobile phones such as Nokia N900 provide this necessary feature.
  • Touch-sensitive keyboard – We all know how the typing experience is like when you use a virtual or touch-based keyboard. Even a Netbook keyboard offers a better experience.
  • Isolated App system – They said you can run around 140,000 apps from App Store. I think they did not give the complete statement. What they forgot to mention was that it can only run App Store apps. And we all know about Apple’s impressive performance in App rejections

If you have anything to add to this list? You are welcome to make your contribution.

If Microsoft is reading this, they might want to take note of this and come up with a better gadget to hurt Apple really hard? But that isn’t likely to happen isn’t it?

[...] Imagine a big box. Let’s call it a tool box. Now inside that tool box there are a hundred small boxes, each containing a specific tool. You need to figure out how to carry the tool box. How are you going to do that when you put yourself in one of the small boxes. [...]

I think the first quick thing is to do same kind of device that runs of full Mac OS X Snow leopard or any other complete OS.

Video chat call still impossible as device does not have a camera in front. Same mistake on the iPhone carried over to the iPad

Steve Jobs said “Is there room for a third category of device in the middle? …Those devices are going to have to be far better at doing some key tasks. …better than the laptop, better than the smart phone. …otherwise it has no reason for being.”

The iPad will do web browsing; e-mail, photo sharing, gaming, music, and read e-books better than a smart phone and a laptop computer. Nobody said the iPad was better at everything that a laptop can do.

Why would you want a camera on a device that is so unsteady? It would be horrible for video conferencing unless it was mounted on a stand. Nobody I know ever uses the camera on their computer.

Within a year there will be so many productivity apps on the app store that the iPad will seriously jeopardize low to mid range lap top computers. People can use their desk top computers for work and their iPads for greater portability.
