Amazon feeling threatened by Microsoft, releases Relational Database service

Amazon has released Relational Database Service (RDS). This is big news. Infact more of a landmark. The reason being, it is the first time that Amazon is offering Relational Database in the form of a service even though it offers other cloud services such as Database Cloud (SimpleDB), Compute Cloud (EC2), Storage Cloud (S3).
Amazon RDS is essentially a MySQL 5.1 instance which is reserved for individual users. A single API call is all that is needed to access the RDS. The user has all of the MySQL capabilities at his disposal plus an additional ability to scale up if need arises.
By using Amazon RDS, customer will be free of performing the painful database administration tasks Since the service will apply the patches automatically, as well backup the database automatically. User will have the option to set the maintenance period.
Although all of this is breaking news. But one wonders why would Amazon be taking such a step. One possible explanation that has appeared on the scene is that, Amazon might be fearing Microsoft as it also has plans of publicly releasing a Azure SQL relational database cloud during the high profile PDC event.
Well, whatever may be the motive for Amazon, at the end of the day it is the users that will benefit from cloud competition. Lets see how it goes.
