Firefox Mobile for Android is apparently the desktop version of Firefox
A few days back, we informed you about the possibility of Firefox Mobile for Android arriving pretty soon. More development has taken place for the mobile version of Firefox for the Android platform. From what I gather, the Firefox Mobile isn’t ready for prime time. Infact developer Vladimir Vukićević discloses that the pre-alpha version is still a ways to go. But the good news here is that the progress is being made in the right direction.a
From the above image, it is pretty clear that the browser version for Android will be using the desktop like UI. Relax, you will eventually be getting an Android specific browser Fennec. This approach has been taken with the view that if the desktop version works fine, then there shouldn’t be any problem with the Fennec one. Vukićević said:
You’ll note that this is the full Firefox interface, and not the Fennec/Firefox Mobile UI; we’re testing with the full interface because it’s significantly more complex than the mobile UI and stresses Gecko much more. So, if the full UI works, then Fennec should work fine as well.
It seems that they are trying to kill two birds with one stone – as the developer states:
Given the interest in Android on netbook and tablet devices, an updated version of the full Firefox UI might find a home on some of these
Some things are working (not fully) and some are not. Mouse events sort of work, top level windows sort of work, keyboard doesn’t work yet but shouldn’t be hard to hook up.
I will be interested to keep an eye on how things fold out in the next few weeks.
