Unfortunately, the title of the post is not a typing mistake, it is a real and bitter truth. Iran Telecommunications agency itself announced the suspension of Gmail giving it the official status. The official entity also disclosed that a national email service will be rolled out pretty soon. The suspension nature is a permanent one.

Google itself has acknowledged this and have said that this is something which they cannot control. They even checked their servers and networks to ensure that the suspension wasn’t due to hardware failure, which unfortunately is not the case. Google said in a statement:

We have heard from users in Iran that they are having trouble accessing Gmail. We can confirm a sharp drop in traffic, and we have looked at our own networks and found that they are working properly.  Whenever we encounter blocks in our services we try to resolve them as quickly as possibly because we strongly believe that people everywhere should have the ability to communicate freely online. Sadly, sometimes it is not within our control.

I am not sure as to what kind of impact will this have on Gmail Traffic in Iran. But more importantly what will be the reaction of the Iranians using Google’s email services. I am still clueless as to what are the intentions behind this move.

Gmail users in Iran have suffered a deep loss. They would have kept certain emails, contacts  information and other related content in their mailbox that would have been pretty significant for them.
