Almost a month back, Google released Google Maps Navigation. However the downside to it was that, it only targeted Android 2.0 powered devices which certainly includes Droid. Good news for Android 1.6 users, as Google has released the Google Maps Navigation for Android 1.6 platform, and that too just in time for the holiday season. Now Google Maps Navigation can run on the likes of T-Mobile myTouch 3G and G1 and other supported devices.

Google Maps Navigation is an internet-connected GPS system with voice guidance and automatic rerouting, all running on your mobile phone. Using Google services over your phone’s data connection brings the following important benefits to GPS navigation users:

  • Using Google search (typed or spoken) to enter your destination.
  • Latest map with updated information.
  • Business and traffic data.
  • Satellite View.
  • Street View along your route.

The just released GPS system brings the new Layers feature, which enables you to overlay geographical information on the web. Also you get the View My Maps feature (view customized maps), transit lines, Wikipedia articles about places and more.

This release does not bring all the features from the Google Maps Navigation for Android 2.0. A few features are missing such as the ability to use the navigate to voice command.

Google Maps Navigation is currently in Beta and is currently available in United States only. Android 1.6 users can get their hands on this exciting GPS system by visiting Android Market and downloading the just released version of Google Maps Navigation
