iPad 2 to have dual cameras and a retina display
Is it just me or is the rumor mill really taking the iPad 2 rumors to the next level. Anways, here is what the latest rumor is all about – Reuters backed by four iPad 2 component suppliers have identified the possibility of the next generation of iPad getting not one but two cameras. One on the back side and one on the front side to give FaceTime another medium to shine on.
Two out of the four sources said they are shipping the same components that came with the original iPad. The third component supplier sees the second iteration of iPad getting front and rear facing cameras. The last but not the least component supplier says he iPad 2 will be slimmer and lighter, with a better resolution display which I am assuming is Retina Display.
Last 24 hours have seen two iPad 2 cases called Crystal Case and Silicon case make an online appearance and both had one common – rear facing camera.

A retina display would be all but impossible. We might possibly see 4x the resolution, like the iPhone got in its last update, but that doesn’t bring it up to the 300dpi needed. The current iPad has a PPI of 132. 4x the resolution (that is, 2048×1536) only puts it up to 264PPI. Even then I’m not sure I’d the rumour.
But retina? The basis for the title is that the screen has >300dpi. The lowest standard 4:3 resolution that would be >300dpi on a 9.7″ monitor is 2560×1920. That would be the highest resolution display apple would ever have sold – the same horizontal resolution as the 30″ and 27″ cinema displays, but much taller.
I’ll believe it when I see it.

I’m not sure about the fact with the name “Retina Display” – you hold your iPad further away from your face than an iPhone, so even with 264PPI Apple could call it a Retina Display. The second argument against a 4x iPhone-res display (2048×1536) would be that the higher the pixel density and the size of the screen, the harder it is to make a screen without pixel errors.
Also, Apple would have to have a better graphics processor in the iPad 2; the PowerVR SGX in the iPad wouldn’t have enough power to drive such a high resolution screen.
