microsftmoneyplusMicrosoft has decided to discontinue Money, a software by Microsoft for Managing taxes, budget and business. This information was acquired via a notice posted on the Microsoft website. Microsoft has decided to stop selling Money after June 30. However it will cotinue to support Money till January 2011. This is the official reason that has been declared behind this move:

With banks, brokerage firms and Web sites now providing a range of options for managing personal finances, the consumer need for Microsoft Money Plus has changed. After suspending annual updates of Money Plus in 2008, Microsoft is announcing today that we will no longer offer Microsoft Money Plus for purchase after June 30, 2009.

Taking advantage of this opportunity Microsoft posted a vote of thanks for all those who were faithful and supportive behind their finance management software.

We would like to thank the many dedicated users who have been enthusiastic supporters of Microsoft Money over the years, as well as our partner financial institutions who helped pioneer a digital vision of financial management.

Adam Sohn, spokesman for Microsoft’s Online Business Services unit said:

Lots and lots of banks and financial institutions are offering these services directly to people these days

In relation to this news, Microsoft and Intuit (creators of Quicken) have decided to join hands and work together with the common vision of providing a tool for the users that will simplify the process of user porting their Money data to Quicken. Sohn in this regard stated:

Both companies said, ‘Hey, it’s not a huge piece of work, so let’s get this done

Scott Gulbransen, the spokesperson Scott Gulbransen gave an optimisitic statement:

We look it as an opportunity to show Microsoft Money customers what they have been missing … over the years

Although  users can continue to use Microsoft Money even after June 30, but it would be useless since things like tax rates and stock prices wont be updated automatically as was the previous practice. So it would be rather a smart thing if they stop using Microsoft Money. They should start looking for some other option.
