Motorola’s long awaited debut Android handset has finally been announced, and it has QWERTY-keyboard Calgary, which would be the first of its type on the market.

Previously Samsung announced its first Android device, and of course the HTC Magic goes on sale from tomorrow but the Calgary, with it’s full slide-out QWERTY and sleek touch-screen could be a real game changer.

This is slightly more of a worry, as social networking handsets generally tend to be pretty lightweight in the functionality stakes, but given Android is supposed to be a high-spec interface to allow lower-cost phones into the market.

Not a lot more information is known at the moment, although rumors of a release in the next two months continue to circulate. Given Motorola’s strong US focus, it’s unlikely the UK would get it until later in the year.

It really is about time it announced an Android handset – for a company that often tries to be an innovator, it lagged sadly behind on that one. Given what people want from devices at the moment, and what they are willing to spend, it’s best to concentrate on getting the basics right. It’s great to see another two possible runners for Android OS as well.
