Outlook Team announced recently, that Outlook 2010 will bring exciting new features for its UM (Unified Messaging) experience. Unified Messaging, which was introduced with Outlook 2007 enables users to receive voice mails and Fax right inside your Outlook Inbox. With Outlook 2010, Unified Messaging will bring new features which includes Voice Mail preview, protected voice mail and call answering rules. The following paragraphs explain each of these features.

Voice Mail Preview

  • This feature basically provides a preview of the voice mail in the form of a transcript which is essentially a written version of the voice mail. This enables you to read the message contained in the voice mail without having to listen to the voice mail. This is useful especially in a scenario where you are in a meeting and receive a voice mail.
  • The preview text is not always 100% accurate due to the limitations of automated speech recognition technology. To accommodate for this, you can easily click a word in the preview text and the voice mail audio around that word is played.

Protected Voice Mail

  • Keeping your Voice Mail private is important. Outlook 2010 understands the significance of this, and has provided an option to protect the voice mails marked private. Using Office Rights management, you can ensure that private voice mails can’t be forwarded to others.

Call Answering rules

  • Outlook 2010 gives you the ability to define the criteria for answering your various, through the Personal Call Attendant. The Personal Call Attendant gives you the flexibility to control how your calls are routed when you aren’t at your desk. For example, you can build a call routing guide to give callers the option to contact another employee (perhaps your manager or your back up), forward the call to your mobile phone, or leave a voice message. It is fully customizable. You can even customize which options callers receive based on whether they are in your contacts list.
