Remember the recently updated Ovi Maps which brought free voice based turn by turn walk and traffic directions for all? Well the very same Maps app has proved to be a gem for Nokia as it has been download for more than 1 million times within just one week of its launch. Wow – this does say something about the app and Nokia’s strategy don’t you think. On an average, it is downloaded on an average of one per second which alone says quite a lot. This information was shared by Nokia’s executive Vice President, Anssi Vanjoki.

Nokia set out to become the leader in mobile maps, navigation and located based services and it seems they are well and truly bang on target.
The 5 countries that top the download race include

  • China
  • Italy
  • UK
  • Germany
  • Spain

The top 5 mobile phone which were the source of more downloads than other phones include

Seeing the N97 in top 5 spot is pleasantly surprising. The reason being that Ovi Maps was rolled out a bit later for the premium Nokia device in comparison to other five device

Vanjoki regarding this milestone stated

This is great news for our third party application developers. Within a matter of days there is an installed base of more than 1 million active users all potentially hungry for new and innovative location-aware apps

Speaking of new and innovative features, starting from March, all new Nokia GPS-enabled smartphones will include the new version of Ovi Maps along with local country map data and access to Michelin and Lonely Planet travel guides at no extra cost.
