We recently saw breaking news on Official PlayStation Blog saying, ‘Sony has started restoring its PlayStation Network and online services back’. And in other surprising news, it has been revealed that, Amazon.com’s web services cloud-computing unit was used by hackers to attack Sony online entertainment systems.

Sony attacked from Amazon Servers

According to news shared in Bloomberg, the cyber attack which compromised user’s personal data was prepared from Amazon rented servers.

An excerpt from Bloomberg reports:

Hackers using an alias signed up to rent a server through Amazon’s EC2 service and launched the attack from there, said the person, who requested anonymity because the information is confidential. The account has been shut down, the person said.

The above statement from an Anonymous person highlights that how expertly hackers entered false information to set up an account (that has now been removed) at Amazon web services, which was later used against Sony online services, to carry out the second biggest online theft of personal data.

Well, Sony has already handed over this case to FBI by providing them all the evidences and information found against the hackers. Now, FBI for the sake of collecting more detailed information might issue search warrants or a subpoena to Amazon.

FBI Special Agent Darrell Foxworth said:

He couldn’t comment on whether the agency had served Amazon with a search warrant or subpoena.

Few days back, Sony claimed that ‘Anonymous the notorious hacktivist group’ was the intruder behind PlayStation Network attacks, further stating that they have found a file on their server with words ‘We are legion’ attached to it.

anonymous hackers attack sony

However, the Anonymous hackers group has already defended their involvement in the PlayStation Network outage by passing a clear message to PSN users that, ‘While it could be the case that other Anons have acted by themselves, AnonOps was not related to this incident and takes no responsibility for whatever has happened with Sony’.

While Anonymous denied the responsibility of this intrusion, then the question arises here is that, which other hacking groups have the abilities and expertness of launching such sophisticated and fatal attack on Sony online entertainment systems?
