How to root Samsung Captivate

Step 1: Download this file and rename it update or update.zip (for Mac users).

Step 2: Transfer the downloaded file onto the SD card of your phone.

Step 3: Download Android SDK from here and follow the installation instructions to set it up correctly.

Step 4: Enable Android Debugging like this: From the homescreen, press Menu, then click Settings. Navigate to Applications>Development and check USB Debugging. Now, hook the phone to the computer.

Step 5: On a PC, click start>run>”cmd” (in the text box) or on a Mac, spotlight “Terminal”. Linux users, you know what to do. PC users may require Samsung Drivers details of which can be found here. Type the following command:

adb reboot recovery

Step 6: Boot your phone into recovery mode. Once in the recovery mode, use the volume keys to navigate to the Reinstall Packages option. Select it by using the power button.
