Recently the giant information database ChaCha teamed with Dexetra, the developers behind Siri’s most serious competition, Iris. The alliance means that you will now be able to get the voice recognition that Iris uses to search for and find answers to just about anything. Apple’s Siri and Android Iris may never be friends, despite their similarities so which digital personal assistant wins?
When Iris was first announced back in October, much was made about the fact that the developers spent a whopping eight hours putting the program together. At first that minimal effort was evident, but with a few recent updates and the ChaCha alliance, Iris is now a formidable foe. While Iris is still in the alpha stage of development, the program is very capable in the areas of word definitions (“Iris, what does ‘irate’ mean?”) and global time (“Iris, what time is it in Tokyo?”). According to a screenshot from SlashGear, the young Iris also does well with pop culture. A user on the site asked Iris what the possibility was of another Tron movie and (after many misunderstandings of the question being asked) it answered that there was a rumor that Tron: Legacy would be the next installment of the series. Pretty cool.
Except that Tron: Legacy came out a little more than a year ago. The great minds at SlashGear came back to the app after the ChaCha alliance was announced and re-asked the question. This time they got an in-depth answer about the (real) next Tron movie and even included a quote from the movie’s star about its status.
The fact that Iris has trouble with measurement conversions (feet to meters) and is a little bit shaky on her English means that, for now at least, Siri is the superior personal assistant app. But it looks like she might have some competition from her kid sister.
