Apple recently posted a job listing for an iPhone software engineer to work on iPhone’s default Maps app. The required candidate will work with the iPhone and iPod Touch Maps team and will play a central role in taking the Maps app to the next level. This is interesting, when you consider the recent series of ongoing events between Apple and Google, and raises a pretty important question which is: Is Apple planning to gain independence from Google Maps?

Google has just announced Google Maps Navigation app for Android 2.0 devices. Google regards this as the next step for Google Maps for mobile. Google Maps Navigation is currently in Beta status. The just released app brings features such as 3D view, turn by turn voice guidance (wow! really cool) and automatic rerouting. Now that’s my idea of making the best use of technology.
