Update 1: Apple has stopped signing iOS 4.0.1. In case you want to downgrade to iOS 4.0.1 and don’t have a saved SHSH for it, don’t worry as you can still downgrade using the guide posted here.
Apple recently rolled out next to useless if not useless iOS 4.0.2 update which didn’t bring any new features. All it did was took away the jailbreak capability of your precious iDevice and in return fixed the PDF vulnerability which should not be there in the first place. Anyways, if you are running on iOS 4.0.2 and want to restore to iOS 4.0.1 you are in luck as the Cupertinos are still signing the iOS 4.0.1 firmware. Steps to restore the 4.0.1 firmware follow after the jump.

Steps to restore iOS 4.0.1 on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G
Step 1 – Download iOS 4.0.1 ipsw file for your specific iPhone model from here.
Step 2 – Connect your iPhone to computer via USB cable.
Step 3 – Launch iTunes.
Step 4 – iTunes will detect your iPhone in the left pane. Click on the Apple Device and then click on the Summary Tab.
Step 5 – Press and Hold Shift (for Windows)/Restore (for Mac) and then click on the Restore button.
Step 6 – iTunes will prompt you to provide the ipsw file. Point iTunes to the iOS 4.0.1 file you downloaded in Step 1 and then click Open.
Step 7 – Voila, you just restored your iDevice to iOS 4.0.1.
