win7newlogoMicrosoft is officially launching Windows 7! If you’ve been using the beta and release candidate for a almost a year already, then maybe today will be just another day. If, however, you’ve just received your party pack, or upgrade box, or just bought a shiny new machine.

Boxes of the new OS hit stores worldwide. But most consumers won’t be upgrading, they’ll use Windows 7 when they buy a new computer. PCs running Windows 7 also are on sale starting, well, now.

Retailers, such as Best Buy, are promoting the new operating system by doing midnight giveaways. Microsoft is holding a launch event Thursday morning in New York City.

At this event Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will deliver a keynote address at 8 a.m. PDT, streaming live online.
